ARTIST'S STATEMENT
"My dancer was inspired by a young woman who had actually studied the art of belly dancing in Egypt as a young girl. She both danced and posed for me for approximately three years, teaching me about belly dancing and its subtleties and origins. According to her, belly dancing is the oldest form of dance known to man. No one knows exactly where it began but it appears to be based on regional and tribal forms of ritual expression, such as the celebration of births, deaths, the harvest and of course weddings.
What interested me about belly dancing was how, from the beginning of time, man has expressed himself through the medium of dance and music. Nowhere on Earth exist civilizations void of this practice. If there is any one single thread that joins us it is to play and dance to music, to involve ourselves in the diverse but common activities of rhythm."
