Salon d'Arts is inspired by the Parisian Salons of prior centuries, beginning with the original exhibition in 1667 when works of the members of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture were exhibited in the Louvre Palace. Academicians continued to control most of the exhibitions held through the 19th century; however, other salons emerged in the latter half of the century as the result of the official Salon's conservative and exclusive policies.

Salon des Refusés was first held in 1863, then Salon des Indépendants in 1884, for artists rejected by the official Salon, including the work of many Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters. Among the exhibitors in the independent salons was Van Gogh, Bonnard, Matisse, Cezanne, Pissarro, Whistler, and Manet, who exhibited his famous painting "Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe" the year it was rejected by the official Salon for its scandalous subject matter.

Salon d'Arts is excited about celebrating the European Salon tradition in Colorado, particularly the spirit of the independent Salons. A panel of respected artists assists in the artist selection, electing their contemporaries whose work embodies the essence of great art. Artists are selected from throughout the U.S. based upon merit, and have freedom to submit works of their choice without interference of a “white collar” jury. Salon d’Arts artists have work in museum collections across the U.S., including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, National Portrait Gallery, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Denver Art Museum, and Philadelphia Museum of Art.

This year Salon has aligned with Art & Antiques Magazine to formally introduce the emerging artist component of the show. Roughly twenty percent of the participating artists qualify for this award by being well known in their respective regions only; they are not yet nationally known. Art & Antiques Magazine’s Managing Editor will select the winner and present him or her with an “Emerging Artist Award” at the Salon gala. The winner will be further honored with a feature in an upcoming issue of the magazine. This recognition is certain to catapult them onto the national arts scene, as it has for Salon artists Ron Hicks and Geoffrey Johnson.

In order to produce a show of this magnitude, the community must be supportive. I am grateful to our Honorary Co-Chairs, Tom & Susan Hilb and Rob & Julie Lewis, who have been instrumental in attracting support from the philanthropic and business community. Without the generosity of our sponsors and patrons, Salon could not thrive. I am also grateful for the artists' support and participation, establishing Salon among the top representational shows in the country.

The long-term vision of Salon is to strengthen its foundation as a top exhibition and sale of living artists; generate significant proceeds to fortify Colorado's economic and cultural strength; and to enhance the lives in our community through education, accessibility, and for a fortunate few, the acquisition of museum-quality fine art.

Thank you for joining us on this journey.
